Congratulations. You earned your law degree! You passed with flying colours. It was not an easy task but you passed the bar, and you should feel proud. Look forward to a life of luxury fighting for justice. But wait? What now? Well, now you lawyer you must move forward and decide what type of firm you want to work for. When we first step out into the world of law, we are looking for one of three things. We are hoping the world like what we have seen on tv. This romantic notion of a team of quirky individuals working together on weird and wonderful cases. Sound familiar. Or, we are looking for truth, fairness and justice. Then again, perhaps you will just be happy once you get your first job. But you should look ahead to where you are going and where would best suit you. Here are some of your options.
A local or regional firm specialises in local lawsuits. If you are hoping to become a pillar of your community, this may be the right choice for you. Particularly, if you noticed different issues about the area growing up. For instance, do you know what the most common crime in your city is. Do you know the recent law cases that made a dent on legal precedent in your area? If you do, it is time to get to work for the people you know and the place you love and care for.
Is there something that pains you? Perhaps you have been affected by it in your personal life. For instance, perhaps you know someone who has been affected by asbestos poisoning. If you do, you may want to work at a firm that specialises in these type of cases. A Mesothelioma lawsuit is about gaining justice for someone who fell ill from being around Asbestos. Remember, if you have been affected by something you can use that rage and passion to your advantage. Or, you may want to specialise in something that you found particularly easy or interesting in college. For instance, family law.
Big firms will unsurprisingly deal with big cases. The stakes are higher, and the rewards are a lot more grand. If you are competitive and are looking to eventually drive home from work in a Ferrari, this is where you need to be. But be warned it will come at a price. Bigger firms are notorious for having their employees work long unreasonable hours. You may have to kiss most of your weekend goodbye. Although, you should expect a big paycheck at the end of each month and at least a few headline-making cases.
However, if you are more interested in your family than expensive cars, perhaps a smaller firm. The hours will resemble something along the lines of nine to five. The pay will be slightly more modest, and you will be righting less significant wrongs. But you will still be helping people using your wits and your intellect.
Whatever you choose, make sure it is what will make you happiest. Nothing is worse than having to work all day on a job that you hate. Remember, if you have difficulty deciding a legal recruiter may be able to help you.
