Airbus A380: The Superjumbo Flies

January 22nd 2007 12:34
The Airbus A380 is so large, so economical and so beautiful it excited the imagination of everyone. Now, and finally, it‘s on its way to be delivered. Would you take a trip in one?

The news today, 22 January 2007, is that “Airbus has fixed electrical problems related to its A380 superjumbo, which have led to major delivery delays for the planemaker.”

“The group said the news meant it had "passed a major milestone" for the plane's production. “

“Deliveries to Singapore Airlines, its launch customer, were now on track to arrive in October, it said. “

“Problems with the A380 have left Airbus two years behind with deliveries, hitting shares at parent company EADS. “

“"We have finished the electrical installation," said Airbus spokesman Tore Prang. "We have handed the aircraft to the cabin equipment team to install the first A380."”

“Last week, Airbus chief executive Louis Gallois said the firm was "determined to complete this first delivery in October 2007, as we announced, and to prepare ourselves for the next deliveries in 2008".”

“Singapore Airlines has agreed to buy 19 A380s from the firm. Other customers include Thai Airways, Virgin and Australian flag-carrier Qantas.”

“However, delays to the A380 have already cost the firm more than $6bn (£3.3bn) and Airbus has warned there could be additional charges to come.”

“Last week, the European group also revealed it had fallen behind US rival Boeing in securing orders for the first time since 2000.”

“Airbus won 824 new orders last year, down from 1,111 in 2005, and below Boeing's 1,050 haul.”

This news was published in the online version of BBC News under the title “Airbus solves A380 wiring glitch”.

According to the Airbus official website on its market outlook, “between 2006 and 2025, some new 22,700 passenger and freight aircraft valued at US$2.6 trillion will be required by aircraft operators, according to the latest Airbus Global Market Forecast. This represents an increase of some 5,400 aircraft compared with the previous one.”

“The Asia-Pacific region is expected to grow to a third of the worldwide market by 2025; transpacific, Europe-to-Asia and transatlantic long haul routes will increase by 60 per cent. Airline hub cities around the world will see their traffic nearly doubling over the next 10 years, with new larger aircraft enabling airlines to maximise profit potential as well address environmental and airport congestion constraints.”

Still with the same source, “it is estimated that Airbus will probably deliver a negative EBIT contribution for the full year of 2006, as EADS announced today.”

“Airbus delivered 434 aircraft, leading to a turnover estimated at approx. 26 billion Euros. The 2006 deliveries include 339 Single Aisle Family aircraft, nine A300 Freighters and 86 wide-body long range airliners. Total deliveries now stand at 4,564 aircraft.”

“With 824 new gross orders, Airbus achieved its second best year in terms of sales. These orders make up for 44 per cent of the market, and include 673 Single Aisles, 134 A330s, A340s and A350s as well as 17 A380s. Net order intake stand at 790, making a 43 per cent share. Valued at US $ 75.1 billion at catalogue prices, the gross orders make for 40 percent of the total transaction values.”
